The Story Behind the Song
Some songs come from one big moment.
This one came from years of small moments that added up to something much bigger.
When Darice and I moved to North Dallas in 1986, we were starting over in a place where we really didn’t know anybody. We had no circle of friends waiting for us, no familiar surroundings, and no guarantee that things were going to work out the way we hoped.
Darice was working for American Airlines, and while I was trying to find my footing, looking for work, playing guitar, and writing songs, she was there.
She supported me.
She supported the guitars.
She supported the music.
And more importantly, she supported me even when there probably wasn’t much evidence yet that any of it was going to lead anywhere.
Two years later, Louie came along, and life got busier, more complicated, and a whole lot more meaningful.
Through all of it, Darice stayed steady.
One of the little things that always stuck with me was something she used to do with my guitars. She would put handwritten notes inside the guitar cases with our name and address on them, just in case one of them was ever lost or misplaced.
Those little notes are still in some of those cases today.
They may not look like much, but to me they say a lot.
They remind me that somebody was looking out for me and for the things that mattered to me.
When I started thinking about all of that, the title almost wrote itself.
You Bet On Me.
That is really what she did.
She believed in me before there was any reason she had to.
She gave me room to chase ideas, write songs, play guitar, make mistakes, change directions, and keep going.
She never needed a guarantee.
She just bet on me.
And when I look back now, I realize how much of my life was built on that kind of support.
That is what this song is about.
Not fame.
Not success.
Not proving anything to anybody.
It is about having one person in your corner who believes you are worth the bet.
And for me, that person was Darice.
